Dissent before the Game

Dissent before the Game

Return league fixture of a game where the away (now home) umpire carded a number of players.

Whilst trooping onto the pitch before the start of the game, a player commented directly to the home umpire with regard to their umpiring ability (carding) and referring to the previous fixture. The umpire though clearly offended by the comment decided to ignore it

What do you think should have been the correct response?

a) Ignore the comment
b) Call over the player and have a word
c) Call over the captain and have a word
d) card the player at the first opportunity in the game

and a thought - a player can be red carded at any point (I believe) not just during a game. My impression of the incident is that if it had occured during the game it would have resulted in a 10 min yellow card for the player and perhaps a word to the captain. Would it have been possible to suspend the player on a yellow before the start of the game?

Re: Dissent before the Game

I don't think you can technically red card someone before or after the game.  If there is misconduct either before or after the game I think you can make a report as to their misconduct on the basis that if they had done it during the game they would have got a red card - and they should end up with the same ban.  On that basis I assume you can't therefore give a yellow card before the start of the game but it would be worth having a word with him.

Re: Dissent before the Game

No cards can be givem before or after any game.

However, you can give an MMO (Matchday Misdemeanour Offence) to any player on the day of a match who is or will be directly involved in game that you are the official.

I think it would be difficult to prove before the game unless you already have the team sheets in your possesion. But afterwards, (which is when it is more likely to happen) it would be easier.

Saying all that I would generally ignore any comments before the game because it would seem more than likely that same player would pipe up during the game, then you can deal with them on the pitch!!  wink

Re: Dissent before the Game

Considering that you can talk to the captains before the game and tell them how you intend to umpire certain aspects of the Rules, I think I would have called the captain over and told him that I didn't appreciate the comments and that he should warn the palyer that if he opened his mouth during the game he could expect an extremely long yellow probably to the end of the game and that a MMO was going to be submitted. You could also mention under the Umpiring section of the Rules 2.2

c it is not acceptable for players to abuse opponents, umpires or other technical offi cials verbally or through body language and attitude. Umpires must deal fi rmly with abuse of this sort and in appropriate circumstances issue a caution, warning (green card), or a temporary (yellow card) or permanent (red card) suspension. Cautions, warnings and suspensions can be given in isolation or in combination with another penalty

h when a player intentionally misbehaves in a serious manner towards another player, umpire or other match offi cial the red card must be shown immediately.

and that you consider his comments to be both intentional and serious calling for the sanction section h dictates.

At lower levels I might also be tempted to start and stop the game immediately and card him. At higher levels where there is a Technical Official I would bring it to his attention and leave him to deal with it (chicken).

Re: Dissent before the Game

I was reading Graham Poll's book "Geoff Hurst, the Hand of God and the Biggest Rows in World Football" the other day, and it described a very interesting take on dissent. The 1966 world cup final is well known for the infamous goal that shouldn't have been. Despite decades of technical investigation, no-one can be 100% sure that the ball went it; suspicion is it didn't, and what scientific evidence there is seems to agree. Given the amount of doubt, no official could be sure the ball went in, and therefore cannot award a goal. You would expect (these days) mass protests from the players, encircling the referee and linesman trying to talk them out of awarding the goal.

However, on the hot sunny day in 1966 which was the world's most important football match, the pinnacle of the player's careers and an event they had spent their lives building up to, the Germans accepted the decision without complaint, rolled their sleeves up and got on with the game. Not even a whisper of dissent.

Now, we're talking about a much lower level of sport, the stakes are incomparable and players are not paid, yet we as umpires are supposed to turn a deaf ear to a certain amount of pre-match dissent, let alone dissent during the game. My inclination would be to call the player over with his captain, and remind them of said cup final moment and the behaviour of the German players that day, and tell them to grow up and get a sense of perspective.

Re: Dissent before the Game

but the scary thing is there are now players on the pitch that struggle with the historical concept of 1986 let alone 1966 big_smile

Re: Dissent before the Game

Assuming the comments were not so offensive as to demand an MMO, no history lessons from me...just a statement to the captain that I'd be starting the game with a clean sheet and no pre-conceptions and expect him to ensure the players do the same.

(But, of course, in your head, the offending player has had his card marked.....as you have in his!!)
